Join us for another evening of songs, stories, and musical conversation at the Tranzac Singer-Songwriter Circle.
This month I'm thrilled to welcome Felicity Williams, one of Toronto's most distinctive and adventurous musical voices. A singer and songwriter whose work moves effortlessly between jazz, folk, improvisation, and experimental music, Felicity has collaborated with many of the city's creative artists, including Robin Dann, Alex Lukashevsky, Luka Kuplowsky, Ben Gunning, Isis Giraldo, Thomas Gill, Christine Bougie, Carlyn Bezic, and Alex Samaras. She is one half of You Can Can with sound and visual artist Andrew Zukerman and is also a member of the touring band for Bahamas.
Joining Felicity will be guitarist Patrick O'Reilly, an expressive and deeply musical musician whose sensitive accompaniment and lyrical playing make him an ideal partner for an intimate evening of original songs.
I'll be sharing a mix of new and old songs, singing, playing trumpet and keyboard, while hosting the evening. The music will once again be anchored by the incredible Michael Herring on upright bass. Michael's strong musical voice, intuitive listening, and years of collaboration with both myself and so many artists across Canada bring warmth, depth, and spontaneity to every performance.
The Singer-Songwriter Circle is a songs-in-the-round experience where we take turns sharing original music, telling the stories behind the songs, and occasionally joining one another along the way. Every gathering is different, creating space for unexpected collaborations, conversation, and connection.
I hope you'll join us for this special evening!

Join us on Sunday, June 21st at the Tranzac Club for an intimate evening of songs and stories at Rebecca Hennessy's Singer-Songwriter Circle. Celebrate the first weekend of summer with three artists whose musical journeys have taken them through jazz, folk, indie music, and opera—and back to the craft of songwriting. Presented in a songs-in-the-round format, the evening offers a rare chance to hear songs in their most personal form.
Rebecca Hennessy is an award-winning composer, trumpeter, vocalist, and bandleader whose songwriting is rooted in jazz harmony, improvisation, and lyrical storytelling. Her songs move fluidly between folk, jazz, and singer-songwriter traditions, balancing emotional honesty with adventurous musical turns.
A performing musician for more than twenty years, Nico Dann has spent much of that time lurking behind a wall of percussion. While many know him as a drummer and percussionist, songwriting has been a constant thread throughout his musical life. His previous songwriting projects include the indie band Sister Suvi, the Toronto project Potions, and the folk band Elephant Ear. After a period spent mostly behind the drums, Nico has recently returned to writing new material and is excited to step out from behind the bronze curtain to share a new collection of songs.
In one capacity or another, Ilana Zarankin has been writing songs and singing them for most of her life. For the past eleven years, she has brought stories to life as a chorus member with the Canadian Opera Company. During a recent chorus drought, she found herself unexpectedly drawn back to songwriting and has been writing a new song each month alongside some of her favourite songwriters. It turns out she still has plenty to say.
We hope you'll join us for an evening of new songs, old stories, and the creative paths that brought them to life.

Tranzac Sunday May 17th, 7:30pm-9:30pm
Rebecca Hennessy’s Singer-songwriter Circle returns to the Tranzac this month for an intimate evening of songs in the round, bringing together three boundary-pushing artists whose work spans songwriting, composition, jazz, and fearless musical storytelling. Joined by the incomparable Michael Herring on upright bass, this edition promises a rare and deeply personal night of shared songs, conversation, and collaboration.
Award-winning composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist La-Nai Gabriel brings her expansive creative vision to the circle. Fresh off major Canadian Screen Award recognition and celebrated for work spanning film, television, orchestration, and original music, La-Nai’s artistry is as cinematic as it is soulful.
Juno-nominated vocalist, educator, and musical shapeshifter Alex Samaras joins with his singular voice and genre-defying approach. From Judy Garland to avant-garde composition, from Tafelmusik to Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Alex’s artistry is bold, vulnerable, and endlessly inventive.
Host Rebecca Hennessy brings her deeply personal songwriting, warm vocal presence, and poetic storytelling to the heart of the evening. Her music bridges jazz, roots, and the singer-songwriter tradition, creating songs that are intimate, emotionally resonant, and rich with lived experience. With new original music that explores family history, migration, and identity, Hennessy’s performances invite listeners into a space of honesty, connection, and beautifully crafted song—while her trumpet adds another expressive voice to the journey.
Together, these three celebrated artists will trade songs, stories, and spontaneous musical moments in one of Toronto’s most beloved listening rooms—an up-close evening of connection, creativity, and extraordinary music.

Join us for Rebecca Hennessy’s Singer-Songwriter Circle featuring Sarah Greene, Michael Herring, and Rebecca Hennessy.

On Sunday, March 15th at Tranzac, three distinct songwriting voices come together for an intimate evening of shared songs and collaboration. Throughout the night, these artists will take turns presenting original material, accompanying one another, and shaping the music in real time—an attentive, listening-forward performance grounded in story and connection.

Sarah Greene’s writing is intimate, concise, and idiosyncratically classic. Rooted in warm, country-tinged folk-rock balladry, her songs explore loneliness, vulnerability, and the tension between freedom and attachment with emotional precision.

Michael Herring—widely recognized as a JUNO-nominated double bassist—steps forward here as a vocalist and songwriter. His project Harrington has been described as a journey into the quirky mind of Michael Herring: eclectic, wry, and grounded, with finely observed details and unexpected turns.

Rebecca Hennessy’s current project places her at the centre as a narrative songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, blending jazz, roots, and poetic song. Her music is inviting and emotionally resonant, exploring connection, memory, mortality, and our shared relationship to the natural world. Her recent single Crickets offers a glimpse into this reflective body of work.

An evening of deep listening, collaboration, and songs shared in the round.
